I decided to write about what, in my opinion, goes into the making of a YA novel which truly becomes popular. This isn't the result of any level of research, just a depth of thought and my own personal experiences. After all, don't we all want to know a potentially popular novel when we read one?
We all know the teen titles everyone loves, but wouldn't it be cool as a reader to say 'I bet this one is going to be popular'? Or as a writer to know why teens are drawn to certain novels?
First of all, look at the cover. Is it eye-catching? Colourful? Depending on the genre, the book should have a colourful cover with easily readable font. It should be eye-catching. Most teen books now have simple covers, with little imaging. Below are some examples of cover fitting this description.
Another good way to be eye-catching with covers is to have a dark colour scheme and then include bright colours or even flames. Silhouettes also capture teens and it is an excellent idea to use silhouettes if you want to suggest a mystery theme within the book. The better the cover, the more people will read the book!
Now to when you actually open the book and begin reading it. Teens generally love supernatural, as general escapism from life. A popular way of writing I love is when writers dare to write about controversial topics. The reason I think teens like this is that not only do they appreciate the daring of the author, but they feel like they are not being talked down to, as children and teens are often used to being talked down to by adults. This is liberating for teens. It should also be full of meaningful quotes to make the book memorable, thus encouraging recommendation via word of mouth.
Thus concludes my opinion on why some YA novels become popular!
