When Colin Leventhal leaned out his bedroom window on the night of May 12th and said goodbye to his girlfriend, he never expected it would be forever. But when Sarah Evans goes missing that night, Colin's world unravels as he transforms from the boyfriend next door to the main police suspect. Then one year later, at her memorial service, Colin makes a phone call that changes everything. Is it possible that Sarah is still alive? And if so how can he bring her back?
As Colin struggles with this possibility, across the street, Sarah’s little sister, Claire learns how to navigate the strange new landscape of life without her sister. While her parents fall apart, Claire remains determined to keep going even if it kills her.
THIS IS SARAH serves as a meditation on loss, love and what it means to say goodbye
My Review
This is Sarah is instantly a novel I would recommend to readers who enjoy the work of authors such as John Green, authors who write a beautiful teenage love story and watch it fall apart for a while.
I would say that the book is a book of emotion. Every emotion you can feel is encapsulated in the words. It is simply a story of the sometimes frightening effects of the kind of loss felt when someone we love vanishes. It shows the innermost thoughts of two of the people struck most by this event, and shows how their mental state fluctuates.
It is also, however, a book of hope and a book of love. The reader is always hoping, always wishing. The dynamic between Colin and Claire is interesting, and watching it grow throughout the novel gives a lighter feel to the whole plot line.
Ally Malinenko is an excellent author, one who can perfectly capture every emotion and make it shine from the pages. She can make you love Sarah, even Sarah is not actively part of the novel. It's not her thoughts that she is showing you, but it feels like it is. Honestly, I commend Malinenko on this novel.
As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. I couldn't stop reading it, and so am going to award This is Sarah:
