REVIEW: The Year of the Rat by Clare Furniss

I know I usually create reviews with a lot of statistics and other stuff in, but today I wanted to keep it quite basic.

My Review

What to say about this novel? Well, it was quite different, completely unique. There was no love at first sight. It was, at times, a book of bitterness and of sorrow. The intensity of the blame Pearl puts on those around her is massive. All of this made me really enjoy the book.

It is a book about how a girl sees her sister as a rat, as some kind of disease that killed her mother and is now plaguing her life.

I liked the book, it was thought-provoking and very interesting. Furniss is an excellent writer of emotions, a writer who is absolutely excellent at manifesting emotion in the characters she creates and making them feel the emotion on their own terms. She is a fantastic YA author, and I absolutely loved the book.

It is an accurate, heartfelt and beautiful portrayal of grief in its many forms.

This novel was unlike anything I have ever read, and I totally loved it! So I am awarding it:
