This is a brave and unflinching novel from the bestselling author of Before I Die. It's a book about loyalty and the choices that come with it. But above all it's a book about love.
My Review
What happens when loyalty stands in the way of truth? Downham tells us in what I believe is an incredible, unadulterated tale. She keeps no secrets and tells no lies in this beautifully-written piece.
After hearing about Downham's debut, Before I Die, winning an award for Most Promising Debut last year, I couldn't resist picking up this new work when I caught sight of it in my local bookstore. I was not disappointed.
Downham made the novel completely unique and fresh, and the relationships were dynamic. She captured perfectly human assumptions and corruption. It is full of truth and romance and doubt. The reader is kept on their toes, with a new event happening almost constantly. We see changes, some or better, some for worse.
There are twists and turns at every corner, along with real and special romance scenes that complete the equation for this novel. You Against Me has everything a reader wants, whatever they like; if you are the kind of reader who likes action, and suspense, there is plenty of that. If you like romance, plenty of that too. Heck, if you like thoughtful, symbolic novels, this is one of those.
My only criticism would be that the romance could have been a little cliché if it had been written slightly wrong. The girl and boy from two completely different backgrounds fall in love. It's not a new concept. But, Downham managed very well to differentiate the romance from others. I might also say that affecting pace might have accentuated the more stressful or passionate moments in the novel.
All in all, I would almost certainly say that this is an amazing novel. I would recommend it to all readers, as Downham is a very promising author who I am sure will go on to create some more fantastic novels. I am going to award Before I Die:
Hope you enjoyed the review. Happy readin'
