REVIEW: The Wolf Wilder, by Katherine Rundell (Illustrated by Gelrev Ongbico)

This book was a Christmas present, but I'd seen it in a local bookstore. A member of staff there saw I was looking at the book and they declared Katherine Rundell to be the 'next J.K Rowling', and I was undeniably and irreversibly intrigued.

I read the blurb, wondering how on earth a book about wolves could be in any way original - I could hardly say that wolves were infrequent in YA novels. And, well... just read and find out.

My Review (Image: Goodreads)

For the first time, I feel truly anxious in doing a review. I am very worried that these words will be inadequate. There is a genuine feeling that I have that trying to fit this book into words would be an insult to the novel!

I will start this review off, then, with one little sentence: This is what a fairytale should be!

The Wolf Wilder is unflinching, bold, and just beautiful in every way. It is brought to life with feelings of the most acute elation and heartbreak that sometimes it hurts.

Rundell is not afraid to show you what life can be- she shows you the darker side of heroism. She talks about injustice, murder, abuse and much more. She doesn't glaze over the facts, embellish them like traditional fairytales do.

It is beautifully illustrated - the work of Gelrev Ongbico is simply breathtaking, the images within the book in a sophisticated black and white.

Rundell has written something of pure emotion. She has reminded me how beautiful books can be, she has made me remember what it is to have true love for ink on pages. The craft of an author is a difficult one, but I believe that Rundell has created something original, but also exquisitely written.

I, personally, feel that this book will become a timeless classic, if given the chance. I have nothing but praise and in fact, nothing but love for this book. It is the first novel in a long time that has pushed the boundaries in my head of what reading can be.

There are some beautiful quotes within it - I won't share my own favourite one, but you all should delve into the book and hopefully emerge with some meaningful words yourselves.

It gives me great pleasure to kick off 2016 with:
