Today, as suggested on Twitter by @Valeryinblack, I am going to do a blog post about lesser seen genres within YA.
There are a lot of YA books, aren't there? I mean, understatement of the century. However, a lot of people complain that those books are all the same .
Sometimes I have to agree with them.
I hate to say it, but sometimes I feel like a little more genre exploration could be beneficial when it comes to YA. I know from experience that there are a lot of fantastically unique YA books, but I think we have all heard someone say 'It's exactly the same as [insert book title here]'.
So, I think it is good to have a look at some genres which I think should come up more in YA for more diverse novels.
1) Historical Fiction
As someone who really likes history, I felt that this was an important one to mention. I myself do not remember ever having read a YA historical fiction novel. I think this is such a shame. I myself, when working on my own writing projects, tend to write historical novels.I really hope that more historical novels appear in YA, because I think YA is really missing out without this genre.
2) Biographies
I understand, obviously, that young adults are unlikely to write biographies. What I mean is that I think that those teens who have had extraordinary lives, those who have actually experienced some of the conflict that is a central theme in YA, are really inspiring. I think that it would be amazing to read a biography about those kind of people. We rarely see them. One example of one such novel, the kind that I think would be great to see more of, is 'This Star Won't Go Out; The Life and Works of Esther Grace Earl.' I am aware that it is a very sad and moving novel, but I believe that such inspirational novels would be amazing for YA
3) Crime Novels
I believe that the fantastic authors we have in the YA community could produce some amazing crime novels. I do believe that there are some with crime as a theme in it, but I think crime novels could be very interesting in YA.
These are just a few genres I think could be included, so let's just call this part one!
